History Of CICU Radio

CICU 94.1 radio has been in operation for the past 13 years and we have found ourselves to be very popular. Presently, our listening range covers Baddek, Iona, Big Pond and area, Arichat, Marion Bridge, parts of Glace Bay and Sydney, and all the Reserves in Cape Breton. The sum total of listeners is difficult to determine, but we would estimate a potential listening audience of about 30 thousand people.

In March of 1994 we helped in organizing a seven day healing week after a rash of suicides at the Big Cove Reserve. The trauma of this particular Reserve had also spread thoughout the other Native communities of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and we too were also grieving over the untimely deaths of our youth. One of the many recommendations made at the Healing Week was to set up radio stations to provide communications and entertainment by means of stories, music, history and programming to promote healthy lifestyles. (All of these topics, CICU addresses.)

In August of 1994 we set up the first Mi'kmaq Radio Station in the Maratimes here in our home town, Eskasoni. A friend from Labrador, while vacationing in the area, delivered an obsolete, but functional, one watt transmitter. The two dreamers (Greg & Joe) went about salavaging a stereo and near the completion of their task, ran a copper wire from their "invention" up to a stick ( an antenna) and we were on the airwaves. Now we are a fully licenced First Nations Radio Station!

Since the birth of CICU, we have assisted other Native Reserves to set up their own radio stations. The knowledge and expertize that we have gained has enabled us to help Big Cove, Tobique, Restigouche, and now Membertou.

CICU has inspired Native Artists to compose and play songs in their own language to be aired on our 94.1 FM dial. Local talent have brought in tapes of their own compositions and when they don't have a tape, we have aired them live. Since then, groups like 'The Relatives', 'Free Spirit', 'Sons of Membertou', 'Eagle Feather', 'Morning Star', and 'Forever', have put out compact disks. We still continue to play unpublished talent as well.
